WELCOME
Guidelines was originally prepared and distributed by the Bergen County Board of Social Services in 1979, in an effort to assist those involved in public service in their understanding of assistance programs available in this county. The publication was greeted with considerable enthusiasm by officials in all our communities and several thousand copies are now in circulation. However, there have been a number of changes in these programs recently and as a result it has been decided that an updated version of Guidelines would be useful.
It should be kept in mind that the purpose of Guidelines is to provide you with an introduction to the programs and a basic understanding of their intent and eligibility requirements. Final eligibility for individual applicants can only be determined by members of our staff. You are urged to refer anyone you believe to be eligible to our office.
Enclosed is a breakdown of programs offered and the eligibility factors involved. This by no means encompasses all situations, but serves as a basic guide for your referrals.
Included in these Guidelines are the following:
1. Glossary of common terms and abbreviations
2. General explanation of categories
3. Eligibility requirements
4. How to apply and what to expect.
We are always ready to serve you in any way possible. For further information or assistance, please phone 368-4200.
